Fordham Prep three-sport star to throw shot put at Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA -- Throwing the shot put was just something Michael Seminario did in between football and baseball season. In just a few months it will be come all he does.

The Fordham Prep senior was a star running back and planning on playing football in college before breaking his collarbone in a win over Holy Cross. He ended up playing just four games and the interest in him dried up leaving just Division III option. So he decided to go a different route.

“My mindset was on football,” Seminario said. “I had some schools calling me and then once I got injured I guess the schools didn’t really think I was a good candidate. A lot of them let me go. But if I can do D-I track, I’d rather do that.”

Fordham Prep's Michael Seminario, who plays football and baseball, will be a <a href=track athlete at Rhode Island next fall. " title="Fordham Prep's Michael Seminario, who plays football and baseball, will be a track athlete at Rhode Island next fall. Joseph Staszewski

Fordham Prep's Michael Seminario, who plays football and baseball, will be a track athlete at Rhode Island next fall.

He will head to Rhode Island on a partial scholarship to throw, but will find himself behind where he potentially could be had he dedicated himself to the event more through high school. He was never pressured into doing track exclusively.

Even with his limited training, Seminario is one of the state’s best. He placed second at the indoor state championship with a toss of 53 feet 3.5 inches in March. Outdoors he was also second at the Mayor’s Cup and finished ninth at the Penn Relays Friday at Franklin Field with a mark of 52-10.75. He missed playing right field for the Rams in a win over St. Raymond to compete at the prestigious meet.

“If he did this all year long he would be throwing 60 feet right now,” Fordham Prep throwing coach Kevin Phipps. “He would have a different technique. He would be spinning instead of gliding. He would spend a lot more time during the weight room. Everyone else here has 20 pounds on him."

Throwing runs in the family for Seminario, who said he will pick up the discus, hammer and weight throw in college. His brother Brian was a shot putter for the Bronx school and was influential in getting Michael to come out of the team. Seminario said he was fully recovered from the collar bone break on his left side by January. It doesn’t hinder him at all now, but did effect how much he could life while he healed.

“Michael is the best shot putter we have had at Fordham Prep in over 45 years,” Phipps said.

He was also one of the Rams top players on the gridiron. The All-Bronx first team selection by The Post was dominant when he played, rushing for 586 yards and five touchdowns, but had to watch from the sidelines most of the time as Fordham Prep went on to have the best season in school history. It went undefeated during the regular season, reaching the 10-win plateau for the first time and lost to eventual champion St. Anthony’s in its first ever CHSFL 'AAA' semifinals.

“The team knew that without me it was going to be hard, but they could pull through themselves,” Seminario said. “Every day I didn’t play was hard. I just felt down. I couldn’t let that affect my team. I had to be supportive. I went to all the practices.”

The missed time left he even more motivated for the track season. Seminario, who Phipps called the most coachable kid he has ever had, felt an extra need to help the team’s other throwers. After the injury he feels he is starting to work himself back up to peak physical condition leaving plenty of potential for his collegiate future.

“On the football field, he is a running back,” Phipps said. “There are not a lot of guys out here [throwing] who would play a skill position on the football field. He is barely 200 pounds and he is doing a lot of things guys 250 pounds can’t do.”

About Bohol, Philippines
Bohol is an island province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region, consisting of Bohol Island and 75 minor surrounding islands. Its capital is Tagbilaran City. With a land area of 4,117.26 square kilometers (1,589.7 sq mi) and a coastline 261 kilometers (162 mi) long, Bohol is the tenth largest island of the Philippines. To the west of Bohol is Cebu, to the northeast is the island of Leyte and to the south, across the Bohol Sea is Mindanao.

About Philippines

The Philippines, officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a country in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. To its north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan. West across the South China Sea sits Vietnam. The Sulu Sea to the southwest lies between the country and the island of Borneo, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and its tropical climate make the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons but have also endowed the country with natural resources and made it one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world. An archipelago comprising 7,107 islands, the Philippines is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Its capital city is Manila.

Twin Spits

Twin Spits

While I was at the beach for Easter, I managed to sneak away with my Dad and brother for a bit to take some seascapes. Sunset was right during dinner, so I was all ready to be the good son and skip it, but all of a sudden, my Dad stands up from the table and says "Let's go!", so who was I to argue? :) We decided to head to nearby Twin Spits to shoot this pier that I hadn't gotten before. It's a cool little spot, with the pier and boat launch, and lots of pilings and other stuff, so I'll definitely be back next time I'm over there. Thanks for talking me into it, Dad.

Still horribly behind on everyone's streams....hoping to make some more progress tonight....

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott hungry to learn the lessons of this season and see team fulfil rich promise

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott hungry to learn the lessons of this season and see team fulfil rich promise

Theo Walcott is the last player to leave the training ground. He strolls across the car park to the media centre in a state of profound relaxation.

After training he has been doing yoga with the Arsenal instructor and, with birdsong as the backdrop to the Good Friday heat, the roaring tumult of Wednesday night’s North London derby seems alien, unimaginable.

Footballers live in a world of contrast, driving to their quiet, isolated training centres behind the tinted windows of their sports cars only to then emerge from a tunnel into an environment of intense focus and brutal noise on match day.

No more intense for Walcott and Arsenal than the North London derby, of course, and that game encapsulated the contrasts of Walcott’s own season. His individual performance was high calibre, scoring the first and making the third for Robin van Persie but the team, once again, lost a lead and with it the chance to keep pressure on Manchester United at the top of the league.

“Without a doubt this has been my best season,” said Walcott, who turned 22 in March. “I feel good, I feel fresh every time I play. The end product is definitely there now, with the goals and assists.”

When he bent his run and sprinted through to open the scoring at White Hart Lane it was his 12th goal of the season, his best return by a distance.

“The boss was very happy with the runs I was making off the ball and I hope that will influence him to play me up front more next season. I enjoy my time on the pitch now. Maybe before I was thinking, ‘I don’t want to get injured’. Now I’m just relaxed and say to myself, ‘go and enjoy it’. I still get the odd few nerves but that’s healthy. A lot of teams will double up on me and I take that as a compliment.”

Walcott records every Arsenal game and watches them back later but the “buzz” he gets after scoring was tempered on Wednesday by the fact it was another game Arsène Wenger’s side watched slip away from them. In the previous North London derby they were beaten after having a two-goal lead at half-time, at Newcastle they lost a four-goal lead and in the previous game they lost the lead they had taken against Liverpool in stoppage time.

“It has been the disappointment of this season,” he said. “You feel like you need to score three or four goals to win at times. The Newcastle game…it shouldn’t happen, even if you go down to 10 men. If we want to be winning things we can’t let a lead like that slip. That’s what have been doing too much this season.

“We have had a lot of disappointing results. Spurs beating us at home when we were 2-0 up is not good, especially for the fans because that’s the one they look forward to all year.

“Hopefully we will learn from it. We have to. If we want to win trophies we need to learn straight away. We can’t be using the excuse of being young players. We’re experienced, we’ve played in the Champions League. We need to stand up for ourselves and take responsibility at times, and I’m not sure we are always doing that.

“In the Tottenham game we showed a lot of spirit and fight. That’s what the fans want to see more of. We’ve got to do that every week. We’ve been hot and cold, doing it some weeks. Instead of making things happen we have been waiting for things to happen.”

This is forthright, clear-sighted stuff and it is a theme he returns to when asked about what he wants to see Arsenal do better next season. “Maybe not cave in when we are 2-0 up and needing to kill a game off, which we don’t do,” he said. “People say it’s about just the defence but it’s not, we have to defend as a whole team and we haven’t been doing that.”

There have been accusations that Wenger is too protective of his players, that his unwavering public loyalty does not foster resilience in his charges. The sacrifices of the manager do not go unnoticed by the players, though.

“The boss is always there for us and he takes a lot of it on his back,” he said. “I know people say there’s a lot of pressure because we are not winning things…There are things he won’t say to you [in the press] that he’ll say to us. He’ll have a go at us when he needs to. We want to win something for him.

"He has shown so much faith in us for so many years so we need to repay him. People are looking at him but maybe they need to be looking at the players because we are not producing it. He believes so much in this team…he’d die for the team. And that’s probably what we need to get in our system: we need to be prepared to die for each other. I think that’s what we are missing at the moment.

“When it comes to a championship it doesn’t matter how you play, it’s about results. Look at Man Utd against West Ham: they went in at half-time 2-0 down but they came back and got the win. It didn’t matter how they did it. It’s been a lot like that with them this season. That’s what we need to be doing.

“It’s good to keep the whole team together and I’m sure there’ll be a few additions. A lot of people talk about the defence and the goalkeeper and those issues. But we’ve got top players. We’ve got Thomas Vermaelen coming back, which is great. He was out training today. He’s a great leader. Maybe we need more leaders on the pitch.

“Cesc [Fabregas] and Robin [Van Persie] are the main two who always try to inspire us. Samir [Nasri] as well. Maybe a few more additions like that.”

The other change Walcott would like to see is a shift back to the position he played in as a youth-team footballer. “I’d love to play up front, everyone has always known that,” he said. “In a 4-3-3 I do a good job on the right given more licence to drift inside. Next season I’ll be given a few more opportunities, maybe in the FA Cup.

“Thierry [Henry] was the same. He started out on the wing and only became a striker when he was about 22. He joined here at 22 and the boss developed him into a striker. He might be doing that with me, I don’t know. It would be great to have a career like him.

“Maybe I could play up front in a two with Robin. I’ve set up so many of his goals this season, probably half of them. We just seem to have that connection. I love playing with him, he loves playing with me and we are gelling very well. He’s got 18 goals, 14 in the Premier League and I think I’ve set up his last seven. It’s working.”

This time last season he was watching DVDs of Freddie Ljungberg to try to improve the timing and angle of his runs. This season he has spent time after training working relentlessly on crossing and finishing with both feet, and on free-kicks.

The yoga, which has done so much to prolong Ryan Giggs’ career, is also new. “I just want to find new ways to be professional and look after myself,” he said.

If the rest of the team share his hunger for self improvement – and his honesty – Arsenal will be in a very healthy state next season.

Two households, both alike in dignity…
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny

On this, the 447th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, it is sobering to realise that were he alive now, he would have had only to cast his gaze towards events in Glasgow these past few days to see that that the capacity for sinister local schism was not exhausted by the Montagues and Capulets. So far, thanks to the vigilance of the postal authorities in intercepting the explosive devices intended for Neil Lennon and others, civil blood has not made civil hands unclean.

But, if one may plunder the Bard’s treasury further, tomorrow Ibrox will be a stage and all the men and women assembled there will be players in a drama that has gone far beyond the customary rambunctious theatre of an Old Firm derby. So many absurd things have been written and said about this episode by outsiders that it really needs to be said that the city is not a stew of endless sectarian tension.

As I write this, I look over towards Lennon’s home across communal gardens filled with families and friends taking advantage of warm spring sunshine to enjoy evening barbecues.

And while the Celtic manager inhabits a cosmopolitan area of Glasgow, in less favoured parts of the city mobs are not on the prowl, seeking victims of the opposite persuasion. Tomorrow, mind you, will not be a day to stroll through certain enclaves in the west of Scotland, where the mix of a holiday weekend, hot weather and cheap drink plus an Old Firm derby at a crucial stage of the championship will be a volatile combination.

Still, it was instructive to listen to Lennon’s response when he was told that Walter Smith had declared that the game was not worth the candle if the latest manifestation of sectarian bigotry – even if only, as is likely, the work of a loner – had reached the stage of a calculated threat to human life.

“It's interesting. I have never once thought about walking away,” said the Celtic manager. “I knew a while back that the package was viable. I was well briefed by the security forces, who have done a magnificent job on this so far.

“I have had to change a bit of my lifestyle obviously, and reassure my family that things are going to be OK, but it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. It's just another chapter in what has been a tumultuous ten years regarding things away from football.

“I never envisaged that coming here would create such hatred for myself or my persona as it has done. I don't know what it is that brings the worst out in people when it comes to myself.

“People have teir theories. I was an aggressive footballer, blah blah - but they cannot have that theory now. It's obviously something else - and we all know what it is.

“It has not deterred me from what I have to do and my job here. It's been the greatest privilege of my life. I am totally committed to what I want to do.

“I had 14 years in England with a completely peaceful, calm lifestyle. I could walk down the street without any hassle - it was a nice way to live your life.

“I was aware obviously of a Celtic-Rangers thing up here but that was as deep as it runs and these people have not grown up with the Troubles. I am best placed to understand what went on over there.

“If this was to escalate further then I would seriously have to reconsider my position. I can do my job OK but living a normal life is a bit different.

“I get my strength from watching my team and coming into training every day. I get my strength from the supporters, who have been fantastic for me. There's a great unity at the club, not just between the supporters and the club but amongst everyone at the club.”

“You know what? After I got a death threat when I was captain of Northern Ireland the atmosphere totally changed there.

“There was a big programme to stamp out sectarianism and if you now go to Windsor Park there’s a good atmosphere in the ground. Something positive came out of that and hopefully in the long run something good can come out of this.

“I’d like to think that we’ve reached a tipping point.”

As for tomorrow, it may not be exactly same old, same old at Ibrox, but Lennon does not yet anticipate a sea change. “There might be a few sympathetic voices in the ground, which would be nice but I am not looking for sympathy - I want to go there and win a football match,” he said.

To finish as we began, it was Shakespeare who asked – in the Scottish play, of course: “Who can be wise, amazed, temperate and furious, loyal and neutral, in a moment?”

For the sake of everyone associated with the Old Firm, the answer must be – all 52,000 fans inside Ibrox on this most supercharged of occasions.

Winter 2010/2011 Gateshead

Part of the series "Winter in Gateshead 2010/2011"

Heavy snow fell early this season and lasted what seemed to be forever. The usual complaints of "what are the council playing at" came about due to difficulties on the roads, but for the most part all kept moving.

The Frost Fayre at the Sage was particularly nice as the Reindeer were set on a snowy Tyne backdrop.

Some of the buildings in the town suffered from the weight of the snow slowly sliding off roofs and taking the guttering down with it.

Environmentalists still face uphill battle on Gulf Coast

Fourchon Beach

A year after the BP oil spill, Fourchon Beach in Port Fourchon, La., remains closed despite the clean appearance of the sand. (Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times / April 9, 2011)

Reporting from New Orleans—

Across the gulf states Wednesday, a number of public events will mark the anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon blowout and oil spill, many of them organized by publicity-seeking environmental groups.

Environmentalists plan to call attention to wetlands loss accelerated by oil in the marshes; concerns about the 1.8 million gallons of chemical dispersant sprayed on the oil; and the spill-related health problems of some residents.

Some big names are attached: Kevin Costner and his band are playing a New Orleans benefit concert sponsored by the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council. Dr. John is headlining a "Solution to Pollution" show not far away.

But if anything, the last year has underscored the difficulties of building a more vigorous environmental movement in a conservative region heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry. On Tuesday in New Orleans, for instance, a rally to draw attention to BP's use of the dispersant Corexit drew fewer than a dozen people. A woman addressed them with a megaphone that hardly seemed necessary.

In the crowd, French professor Robert Desmarais Sullivan, 68, said that the perceived threat to oil and gas jobs was one reason for the lack of support. Nor did it help that the effects of the spill are spread out and difficult to see.

In Louisiana, the state hardest hit by the spill, the most polarizing environmental issue was the deep-water drilling moratorium issued by the Obama administration to assess industry safety and draw up new rules. The moratorium was supported by the Natural Resources Defense Council and other leading environmental groups but opposed by many Louisiana residents and state leaders.

Portraits From the Gulf

One year later, five people whose lives were changed by the oil spill share their stories.

"In a New Orleans Times-Picayune article Tuesday, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) criticized President Obama and "his environmental extremist allies" for trying to "advance their anti-drilling agenda."

At an event called the Gulf Coast Leadership Forum, shrimper and oysterman George Barisich sat at a booth for the United Commercial Fisherman's Assn. A T-shirt on display showed drawings of dead gulf wildlife and declared that BP was "bringing oil to American shores like never before."

Next to Barisich was a booth for the Gulf Restoration Network, an environmental group, which prominently displayed a brochure titled "United for a Healthy Gulf." But Barisich said he wasn't too keen about uniting with environmental outfits that had hurt his business by forcing him to use devices on his nets that help sea turtles escape — along with some of his cash crop.

"We haven't joined ranks with them," Barisich said of the major environmental groups. "It was so funny. They reached out to me, and I said, 'Do you know who I am? Do you know what you've done to me for the last 20 years?' "

Environmentalists have been able to garner support for coastal restoration. On Wednesday, environmentalists plan to join Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) to urge Congress to pass his bill to dedicate at least 80% of BP's fines under the Clean Water Act to restoration of wetlands that have been damaged by the oil spill — but also by decades of canal building and dredging, some of it for oil pipelines.

A June 2010 poll of coastal residents in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and western Florida by Louisiana State University researchers found that when given a choice, two-thirds of the people would choose protection of wetlands and wildlife over oil drilling.

Wales forward Andy Powell 'kicked and punched by around 10 people' during fight in London bar

Wales forward Andy Powell was suspended on Tuesday along with Wasps team-mate and England prop Tim Payne “pending an internal investigation” by the Premiership club into an incident in a west London pub on Monday night.

Powell claims he was knocked unconscious and left with a head wound that required at least 10 stitches after being struck by a bar stool during an altercation with football supporters at The Walkabout pub on Shepherd’s Bush Green.

The controversy emerged just a day after Powell’s former international team-mate, Gavin Henson, was suspended for a week by Toulon for allegedly fighting with team-mates following a night out after his side’s victory over Toulouse in Marseille.

In an exclusive interview with Telegraph Sport, Powell, who played at No 8 for Wales in the opening Six Nations game against England in February before missing out on the rest of the tournament with shoulder injury, says he was “kicked and punched by around 10 people” before he was struck on the head with the stool.

“I was knocked to the ground by a gang who then started to kick and punch me,” Powell said. “It was pretty scary. I curled up into a ball and put my hands over my face and temples but couldn’t cover the back of my head.

“I was then hit by a bar stool and lost consciousness after that but I suffered a pretty bad cut. There was blood everywhere. I think I lost around two pints of blood in the pub and was taken away in an wheelchair and then taken by ambulance to a hospital where they stitched me up.

“I needed at least 10 stitches but I am OK now. I am feeling sore all over, but it was just one of those things.”

Powell says he had gone to the pub “for a few drinks” with Payne, who has been capped 22 times by England and last played for Martin Johnson’s side against Australia on the tour last June.

Powell, 29, who joined Wasps at the start of the season, admitted he had been engaged with some “banter” with some Queens Park Rangers supporters who had entered the pub following the football club’s Championship match against Derby County.

The match, which ended 0-0, was played at QPR’s nearby Loftus Road ground, where Wasps used to play before moving to Adams Park in High Wycombe.

“A load of QPR fans came into the pub after their match and I think they heard my Welsh accent and started giving me a bit of stick,” Powell added.

“We started singing a few songs and exchanging a bit of banter but then it all kicked off. I was asked by the police afterwards if I wanted to press any charges but I said I just wanted to forget about it and move on.”

The Metropolitan Police last night confirmed they were investigating the incident, but said no arrests had been made.

“Officers were called at 10.30pm last night to reports of an altercation at the Walkabout pub in Shepherd’s Bush Green,” said a spokesman. “The incident is being investigated by officers from the violent crimes unit at Hammersmith in Fulham. There have been no arrests and inquiries are ongoing.”

It is understood the incident has been captured on CCTV and Wasps will review the footage today.

It is likely that Wasps will bring their investigation to a swift conclusion, given that they have an important Premiership match against Bath on Saturday.

“The club is not in a position to disclose any further details at this stage and will not comment until the internal investigation has concluded,” said Wasps in a statement.

It is understood there was no official complaint to Wasps by the management of The Walkabout pub, who when contacted last night denied any knowledge of the altercation.

The Rugby Football Union, which only last week had to warn England full-back Ben Foden about his

future conduct after receiving a police caution for causing criminal damage following a row with a taxi driver, said it was aware of the incident.

“At the time this is a matter for the players and their club and we are working with them to understand the facts of the situation,” said an RFU spokesman. “We are confident the player will co-ope rate fully with the club’s internal investigation.”

Do You Have Old-Lady Hands?

By Kate Sullivan, Allure magazine

This morning, while riding the subway, I looked up at my right hand struggling to hold onto the horizontal bar over my head (can we save the vertical poles for the short people, fellow passengers?), and noticed that my hand looked more weathered than my beat-up leather jacket. Shudder. How did this happen?!

Well, I haven't been moisturizing enough in this dry weather, and worse still, I haven't been applying SPF to my hands. (I swear, I'm always on top of my face and neck; and when the weather is warmer and I'm more exposed, I'm diligent about slathering my whole body.)

But I'm going to be taking better care of my hands from now on, especially since a recent poll of allure.com users found that 30 percent thought that their hands were the body part that showed their age the most.

In the April issue, associate editor Elizabeth Siegel asked the experts for the best tips for notorious age-revealing (and sometimes age-exaggerating) body parts, including the hands. Turns out, we should be treating them a lot more like our faces, not only during the day with SPF, but also at night, with retinols that will increase collagen production.

Writes Siegel, "Howard Sobel, clinical attending physician in dermatology at Lenox Hill Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and founder of DDF, recommends DDF's Retinol Energizing Moisturizer to patients in their late 20s and a stronger prescription retinoid, such as Renova, as they reach their 40s. If bulging veins are the problem, Sobel says that a hyaluronic acid filler, such as Juvderm or Radiesse, can make them less noticeable by plumping up surrounding skin."

For more tips on targeting specific body parts in your anti-aging routine, check out "Body Talk" in the April issue. And if you want to know more about hands—like how many minutes it takes for them to prune in the bathtub, what SPF top hand models use, and who invented the high-five—check out Beauty By Numbers in that same issue.

WD Reviews: Overnight Hair Treatments

By Mandy Major

With all the damage caused by blowouts, highlights and other treatments, it’s no wonder many of us suffer from dry and depleted hair. The result is an unruly mane that’s either limp as can be for straight strands, or tendrils that are frizzed to the max for curly types. With spring upon us, we thought it was the ideal time to repair and rehydrate for the season. And we went for the quickest route possible: fuss-free overnight hair creams, serums and masks. But do these work-while-you-sleep concoctions actually deliver? Read on to discover the results of our tests.

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Overnight Hair Rescue Repair While You Sleep

Score: 5

What WD had to say: With a texture similar to styling cream and a “clean and slightly perfumy” scent, this product got raves from our tester, who said it left her hair feeling “noticeably softer the next day.” She especially liked that it didn’t require the active wait-time of typical hair masks, which she needs for her dry and color-treated hair. “I was worried that it would make my hair slick and uncomfortable to sleep with, but it absorbed easily and I just put my hair up in a bun like normal. I was planning to put a towel on my pillow just in case, but there was no need to,” she says. $35; Ulta.com

L'Oral EverStrong Sulfate-Free Overnight Repair Treatment

Score: 5

What WD had to say: Our reviewer would “absolutely” buy this treatment, which “smells delicious—and expensive!” Because our tester has long and thick hair, it took a few more pumps of the product than recommended, but the result was hair that felt “moisturized, heavy and healthy.” And unlike with other hydrating treatments, our reviewer enjoyed that it didn’t “require a thick slathering of product, heat to activate it or a cap to contain the mess.” $8.99; LOrealParisUsa.com

Redken Real Control Overnight Treat

Score:5

What WD had to say: There wasn’t anything our reviewer didn’t like about this product, which she says she would buy thanks to its pleasant scent and texture. It left no residue on her pillow and produced great results for her hair. “The product made my hair softer and more manageable, as promised on the package,” she says. $20; Redken.com for salon locations

KMS California MoistRepair Overnight Mask

Score: 4

What WD had to say: Although originally thrown off by applying this conditioner-like product to dry hair, our reviewer liked this subtly scented mask. The product absorbed quickly and left her hair “softer and a little more manageable” the next day. Her only hesitation: the price. “I’m happy with it overall, but not sure the results are visible or dramatic enough to justify the price. But if my hair seemed especially dry or frizzy, I would probably splurge for it,” she says. $29.95; KMSCalifornia.com for salon locations

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Crme Serum Overnight Repair Formula

Score: 3.5

What WD had to say: Our reviewer gave this product a thumbs-up for its “very nice” scent and light texture, which didn’t leave her hair greasy or crunchy—“both are big problems I've had with anti-frizz products I’ve used in the past,” she says. However, this product probably isn’t best for very curly hair: “When I woke up in the morning my hair was definitely less frizzy, but a lot of the curl was gone, too. So this may be better for women trying to straighten their hair, not curly-haired women trying to tame the frizz.” $8.99; JohnFrieda.com.

See which commonly followed beauty rules should be broken.

Mizani H2O Intense Strengthening Night-Time Treatment

Score: 3

What WD had to say: This creamy formula left our reviewer's hair “noticeably softer,” but it also affected the natural curl of her hair, “weighing it down a little too much.” Our tester liked that the treatment was simple to use and easily absorbed, but was deterred by the “very strong and spicy scent,” which remained in her hair throughout the next day and after an additional washing. $18; Mizani-USA.com for salon locations

L'Oral Professionnel Expert Liss Ultime Nuit Smoothing Night Treatment

Score: 2

What WD had to say: Despite the product's “refreshing and nice” smell, our tester found it had a sticky texture that left her with soft, but overly-saturated hair. “I have very fine hair and products usually don’t do that well anyway, so I tried using a very small amount,” she says. “Unfortunately, it left a greasy feeling, and despite the directions indicating there was no need to wash my hair in the morning, I had to.” $35; US.LOrealProfessionnel.com for salon locations

Stan Kroenke and key figures in Arsenal takeover: profile

Stan Kroenke and key figures in Arsenal takeover: profile

With Stan Kroenke set to take 62 per cent shareholding in Arsenal, Telegraph Sport looks at who the American is and the club's other stakeholders.

Majority: Stan Kroenke is estimated to be worth $3 billion Photo: GETTY IMAGES

Stan Kroenke

A 63-year-old businessman whose sporting empire already includes the Denver Nuggets (basketball), Colorado Avalanche (ice hockey), Colorado Mammoth (lacrosse), Colorado Rapids (football) and St Louis Rams (American football). His estimated worth is $3 billion and both Kroenke and wife Ann, a Wal-Mart heiress, feature independently on the Forbes list of the world’s 250 richest people. Has never sold a share in any of his sports investments and is now arguably the most influential owner of sports teams in the world.

Will have: 62 per cent

Danny Fiszman

A hugely influential director who played a major part in the historic move from Highbury to the Emirates. Fiszman made his fortune as a diamond trader and acquired more than 25 per cent of Arsenal. He formed a strong alliance with Kroenke and has previously already sold around nine per cent of his shares to the American businessman. He is now seriously ill with cancer and has agreed to sell his remaining 10,025 shares to Kroenke for around £115 million.
Had 16.1: per cent

Alisher Usmanov

With business partner Farhd Moshiri, Red and White Holdings initially became involved in Arsenal in August 2007 after buying the stake of former vice-chairman David Dein. An Uzbek billionaire and Arsenal fan, Usmanov previously proposed a rights issue for the club to generate further revenue for Arsène Wenger, who he calls a genius. Despite owning more than a quarter of a the club, he has never been invited on to the board. He could retain his blocking stake and so could prevent Arsenal from becoming a private company and being delisted from the stock exchange.
Had 27.1: per cent
Will have: ?

Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith

Owns 15.9 per cent of the shares and was an Arsenal director from 2005 until 2008 when she was ousted from the board. Bracewell-Smith’s shares have been in her family for the past three generations, but she was deeply hurt at her treatment by the directors and they subsequently went up for sale via Blackstone, a global financial services company. It is understood that she initially wanted around £150 million but has now settled for their market value of £114 million.

Sick of wearing headphones? Untether with a portable iPhone speaker

It may resemble a retro cassette tape, but the iMainGo portable speaker is anything but old school. All the sound systems in your house will be jealous of this lightweight powerhouse from Portable Sound Laboratories.

IMainGo Founders Tim Jacobus (on left) and Jorge Ragde seen here with rapper Akon are making a big impact with iMainGo. It’s designed for use with an iPhone, iPod touch and other MP3 players, and it doubles as a protective case (you don’t even have to open it to control the music). You can take it to the park, the beach, the backyard or wherever you want to share your music -- iMainGo delivers the boom, without the box.

iMainGo <a href=portable speakers for MP3 players or iPods" title="iMainGo portable speakers for MP3 players or iPods" height="98" width="156"/>

iMainGo portable speakers for MP3 players or iPods

The big sound comes from iMainGo’s high-output titanium speakers, paired with tuned porting for bass reproduction and a digital music amplifier. The iMainGo 2 model runs on four AA batteries, while the iMainGo X uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The iMainGo X also has a few more whistles and bells, including two headphone jacks so you can listen with a friend, plus a microphone jack so you can sing along with your music, karaoke style. There’s also an auxiliary jack that lets you use the iMainGo X as an external stereo speaker system for any device with a 3.5 mm connection -- laptop, cell phone, electric guitar, you name it.

The best part of iMainGo is that it’s high tech but not high priced. It’s easy to use and a total crowd pleaser – even among finicky (and notoriously hard to buy for) teens.

Junior Hoilett is proving an exciting talent whose goals could be hugely significant in Blackburn’s continued struggle for Premier League survival.

Having scored a late equaliser as Rovers wiped out a two-goal deficit in the previous home game with Blackpool, the young Canadian again came to the rescue with a further point-saving strike in an equally crucial relegation encounter with Birmingham.

Hoilett’s fourth goal in as many games came deep into first-half injury time and achieved home parity after Birmingham had obtained a 31st minute lead through Lee Bowyer. The result, however, left Blackburn still looking for their first league victory in eight games, this being their third successive draw.

Hoilett’s presence was immense in a tight, tense struggle which left both sides bracketed on 35 points and with identical goal differences although Birmingham have a game in hand. The home threat following Hoilett’s departure because of a slight hamstring injury midway through the second half faded immeasurably. Birmingham’s better passing illuminated a tedious match, however a draw was a satisfactory outcome for both sides although it will do little to ease their relegation worries.

Hoilett is becoming something of a saviour for Blackburn and his manager, Steve Kean, said: “He is really on top of his game and is showing a lot of progress. Junior can petrify defenders. While we are taking little steps we need to take a leap. However we have got to keep chipping away and maintain the momentum.”

Blackburn achieved early dominance with a more urgent approach but it came to nothing with Jermaine Jones and Chris Samba both going close. When Birmingham responded, their first attack of note saw them take the lead. There appeared little danger when Sebastian Larsson crossed from the right, but Cameron Jerome showed good control before lofting the ball into the middle where Bowyer headed in from close range.

Birmingham came close to doubling their lead when Craig Gardner struck a post from a free kick but then, in injury time, Liam Ridgewell was dispossessed by Hoilett who sprinted beyond the exposed visiting defence before rounding Ben Foster to score.

Alex McLeish, the Birmingham manager, was disappointed at the way they conceded although he could not argue with the result.

He said: “We were punished for that mistake but overall I am happy at the point after handing them that gift. We were the better team in the first half but the goal gave Blackburn a lift and Hoilett is in such great form at present.”
