WD Reviews: Overnight Hair Treatments

By Mandy Major

With all the damage caused by blowouts, highlights and other treatments, it’s no wonder many of us suffer from dry and depleted hair. The result is an unruly mane that’s either limp as can be for straight strands, or tendrils that are frizzed to the max for curly types. With spring upon us, we thought it was the ideal time to repair and rehydrate for the season. And we went for the quickest route possible: fuss-free overnight hair creams, serums and masks. But do these work-while-you-sleep concoctions actually deliver? Read on to discover the results of our tests.

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Overnight Hair Rescue Repair While You Sleep

Score: 5

What WD had to say: With a texture similar to styling cream and a “clean and slightly perfumy” scent, this product got raves from our tester, who said it left her hair feeling “noticeably softer the next day.” She especially liked that it didn’t require the active wait-time of typical hair masks, which she needs for her dry and color-treated hair. “I was worried that it would make my hair slick and uncomfortable to sleep with, but it absorbed easily and I just put my hair up in a bun like normal. I was planning to put a towel on my pillow just in case, but there was no need to,” she says. $35; Ulta.com

L'Oral EverStrong Sulfate-Free Overnight Repair Treatment

Score: 5

What WD had to say: Our reviewer would “absolutely” buy this treatment, which “smells delicious—and expensive!” Because our tester has long and thick hair, it took a few more pumps of the product than recommended, but the result was hair that felt “moisturized, heavy and healthy.” And unlike with other hydrating treatments, our reviewer enjoyed that it didn’t “require a thick slathering of product, heat to activate it or a cap to contain the mess.” $8.99; LOrealParisUsa.com

Redken Real Control Overnight Treat

Score:5

What WD had to say: There wasn’t anything our reviewer didn’t like about this product, which she says she would buy thanks to its pleasant scent and texture. It left no residue on her pillow and produced great results for her hair. “The product made my hair softer and more manageable, as promised on the package,” she says. $20; Redken.com for salon locations

KMS California MoistRepair Overnight Mask

Score: 4

What WD had to say: Although originally thrown off by applying this conditioner-like product to dry hair, our reviewer liked this subtly scented mask. The product absorbed quickly and left her hair “softer and a little more manageable” the next day. Her only hesitation: the price. “I’m happy with it overall, but not sure the results are visible or dramatic enough to justify the price. But if my hair seemed especially dry or frizzy, I would probably splurge for it,” she says. $29.95; KMSCalifornia.com for salon locations

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Crme Serum Overnight Repair Formula

Score: 3.5

What WD had to say: Our reviewer gave this product a thumbs-up for its “very nice” scent and light texture, which didn’t leave her hair greasy or crunchy—“both are big problems I've had with anti-frizz products I’ve used in the past,” she says. However, this product probably isn’t best for very curly hair: “When I woke up in the morning my hair was definitely less frizzy, but a lot of the curl was gone, too. So this may be better for women trying to straighten their hair, not curly-haired women trying to tame the frizz.” $8.99; JohnFrieda.com.

Mizani H2O Intense Strengthening Night-Time Treatment

Score: 3

What WD had to say: This creamy formula left our reviewer's hair “noticeably softer,” but it also affected the natural curl of her hair, “weighing it down a little too much.” Our tester liked that the treatment was simple to use and easily absorbed, but was deterred by the “very strong and spicy scent,” which remained in her hair throughout the next day and after an additional washing. $18; Mizani-USA.com for salon locations

L'Oral Professionnel Expert Liss Ultime Nuit Smoothing Night Treatment

Score: 2

What WD had to say: Despite the product's “refreshing and nice” smell, our tester found it had a sticky texture that left her with soft, but overly-saturated hair. “I have very fine hair and products usually don’t do that well anyway, so I tried using a very small amount,” she says. “Unfortunately, it left a greasy feeling, and despite the directions indicating there was no need to wash my hair in the morning, I had to.” $35; US.LOrealProfessionnel.com for salon locations
