After losing his best friend to an on-field heart attack, David Falter meets a homeless man named Billy who fills two of his late friend's roles: sparkplug softball player and singer for David's jazz trio. David eventually discovers Billy's secret: he's Billy Saddle, the baseball fan whose intereference deprived his Memphis Blues of a long-awaited pennant twelve years before. When Billy's identity is revealed by a local paper, he is forced to consider his options, including a startling new possibility: facing up to his infamy, perhaps even embracing it in the style of the modern scandal-celebrity. And, perhaps, inviting the attention of the enraged fans he's been trying to flee.
