Some of the most vexing management challenges facing managers of modern national parks involve the large wild animals for which the parks are so famous. For much of the Twentieth Century, uncertainty and controversy surrounded the status of native elk in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. There were questions whether the native Roosevelt elk of the Pacific Northwest had even inhabited the present area of the park. Historian and naturalist Paul Schullery's historical study of the documentary record, funded by the National Park Service and released in 1984, reviewed extensive historical evidence from the nineteenth century to establish that elk were indeed native to the park. The study also helped clarify the early arrival and spread of non-native introduced Yellowstone elk in the Mount Rainier National Park area, and documented dozens of early sources on elk and other large mammals species in the park area.
