You probably did your first play in elementary school and were instantly hooked. The applause, the lights, the attention! Acting is tremendous fun and perhaps one of the most fulfilling activities out there. You actually get to be someone else for a few hours, live other people's lives, and experience different human beings. Like most people, you've grown up on TV and the movies and often had these feelings:
• I could do that
• I kind of look like that actor/actress
• I would say those lines differently/better
• I can sell that product

The most important thing to understand is that most of the actors who achieve some degree of success do so because there is absolutely nothing else in the world that they can possibly imagine themselves doing. That being said, most must do a lot of "grunt work" type jobs: waiting tables, maid service, temping, or anything else that will pay the bills while allowing themselves flexibility in schedule, so that there's time for auditions, meetings with casting directors and agents, and working on your image.

In a way, a career in acting is similar to marketing and sales. A career in TV and film acting requires you to market yourself. You must find the best and most appropriate way to present yourself to those who are hiring. True, you have to do this to get a job in any profession, but an actor will be doing this kind of self-promotion on a daily basis. There's no such thing as job security in the world of television and film acting, so it is your job always to be on the lookout for the next assignment.

Knowledge is power, so stay current on the show business trade papers, and even if you're fortunate enough to have a great agent who gets you a lot of auditions, you must do a lot of your own research. Talk to people, take classes, and be aware of the latest trends in the industry.

Once you get the job, you are expected to know what you're doing. This is where the technique you develop and consistently practice (in classes, workshops, or on stage) is crucial.

Most important, however, is your attitude. Many actors are jaded and bitter; it's a very tough business, full of failure. But it's not impossible, and you'll often find that working actors are generally positive about their outlook on the business - and life.
