The southernmost tip of the Mediterranean coast of Sicily is further south that Tunis. Among its main assets are the beautiful beaches with very fine, golden sand. In the past, civilisations developed here and boats sailed in the clear waters of this coast.
Beyond the port and Cape Passero ("sparrow") is Isola delle Correnti ("isle of currents"), the southernmost part of the European continent. There are a number of inlets, such as Concerie ("tanneries", used to process leather in the sea), Ponterio and Carratois, followed by the Marza bogs, with many different species of wading birds and therefore a great place for bird watching.
The attractive cliffs of Point Castellazzo and Ciriga have rocky stacks worn by the wind and the sea. Isola dei Porri ("isle of leeks")is an interesting natural park and is quite close to the long beach of Santa Maria del Focallo (about 2.5 Km). The Cabrera Tower, the symbol of Pozzallo, overlooks the town. Between this town and Marina di Modica, Donnalucata and Marina di Ragusa there are coves, beaches and rocks. The mouth of the Irminio river - a picturesque natural park - is worth visiting.
The next part of the coast has long beaches and jagged areas. Past the mouth of the Ippari river is Scoglitti (part of the municipality of Vittoria), with an important port between two large beaches. This is also the first part of the "Macconi" area. The great dunes have been replaced by greenhouses.
Part of the area around Gela has been ruined by oil industries and the Manfria beach is quite near this town. The district of Falconara (a town with a lovely castle) has long beaches and rocky coasts. There are long beaches along the flat coast leading to Licata and there are attractive little coves in Morghella, Cape San Nicola and Nicolizia. Marina di Palma, also known as "Gattopardo Riviera", is a sunny area under the Montechiari castle. The rocky capes have unusual shapes, making the area attractive. Do not forget to visit Punta Bianca ("white point") and admire the white marly limestone, blended with the blue sky. The views of Scala dei Turchi ("staircase of the Turks") and Capo Bianco, near Eraclea Minoa, are spectacular.
Torre Salsa and "foce dei platani" ("river mouth of the plane trees") are natural parks. There are more beaches than rocks between these parks and Sciacca. The beaches of Maragani, Fiore (awarded the "blue fl ag" award for its crystal clear waters, for several years in a row) and Porto Palo di Menfi (with its square tower), past Capo san Marco, are worth mentioning. Between the mouth of the Belice river and the long beach of Santa Marinella (near Selinunte), the beaches have posidonia prairies. The salt pits along the coast, up to Marsala, are attractive to look at. Our itinerary ends when we reach Cape Lilibeo, where Garibaldi landed during his historic expedition.
